IT will be a tightly contested affair in round three of the 2016 Queensland Saloon Car series, with the category returning to Queensland Raceway at the Shannons Two Days of Thunder meeting this weekend, June 11 and 12.
The previous occasion Queensland Saloon Cars featured at the 3.12 kilometres Ipswich circuit was as part of a contingent of 13 Queensland-based drivers who joined the Australian Super Six Touring Car Series grid for round five of their series at the Shannons Nationals last year.
The Queenslanders impressed on the big stage, with four drivers featuring in the top six combined qualifying times leading into the first race. The best of the local contingent were Ashley Jarvis who finished third outright for the round, and 2014 Queensland Saloon Car champion Gary Beggs who made his name known with a podium finish in race three.
This year the category appears at Queensland Raceway in its own right, fresh from the CAMS State Championship meeting at Morgan Park a little over two weekends ago, where Queensland HQ Holden series convert John Carter secured a round victory on his series debut.
The CAMS State Championship leader will not join the 13-car grid this weekend, where the class welcomes back New South Welshman Sam Lee in the Raleigh Raceway AU Falcon. Gary Beggs (134 points) heads to QR in the lead of the club championship in the Coates Hire VT Commodore ahead of Coleby Cowham (114 points) in the Escape Energy AU Falcon and Shayne Hine (107 points) in third in the Spraytech AU Falcon.
