Round 1 of the Queensland Motor Racing Championship kicked of the start of the 2014 saloon car season. The field was an even split with 5 Ford and 5 Holden drivers ready to battle it out on the Morgan Park Raceway circuit. Qualifying saw the VT Commodore of Garry Beggs coming off his strong finish at the end of last year set the bench mark with a 1:28.69. Followed by the AU Falcons of John McCleverty 1:28.95 and Luke Anderson 1:29.01 setting up a Holden Vs Ford Front Row for race 1.
A mistake from McCleverty on the opening lap had him under pressure early with Anderson making a pass at Gum Tree Corner and opening the door for Chris Lulan’s Commodore to sneak through at Siberia. The battle for 2nd allowed Garry Beggs to skip away in clean air to a lead that wasn’t challenged for the rest of the race. McCleverty kept the pressure on and was rewarded on lap 4 when Lulan spun at T Junction. After a good battle by Anderson to retain 2nd place, McCleverty finally made it through on lap 7 and held 2nd to the checked flag. Anderson pressed on to stay with McCleverty but went too deep into turn 1 under steering off the track. This handed 3rd place to Coleby Cowham who drove a clean race from start to finish.
Race 2 turned up the heat in the middle of the pack as Beggs and McCleverty drove away from the front of the field. Cowham had a good start jumping into 3rd position leaving Shane Hine Defending hard against Anderson and Lulan driving through the field from their race 1 excursions. Lulan managed to squeeze past both Falcons but a failing alternator cut his race short, Cowham also succumbed to mechanical issues on lap 3. While Anderson and Hine fought fiercely for 3rd place ultimately coming together in a big incident at Siberia that left both cars heavily damaged and Hine heading to the pits with a puncture. Leaving Anderson to make it to the line in 3rd position.
Was the cleanest race of the weekend allowing Garry Beggs to complete his round 1 domination. That made it a clean sweep of all 3 races proving to be the one to beat at his home track. John McCleverty not to be missed drove well taking out all 2nd placing’s for the weekend having worked hard to secure the spot in race 1 and making it a close finish in race 3. While Luke Anderson Fought hard to be at the head of the battle pack and claim 3rd for the Round
